Q: MY INTERNET ISN'T WORKING
A:

This is a common problem, but difficult to troubleshoot because there are so many things that could cause it. This answer assumes you have a modem or router and an ADSL Broadband service connected through your telephone system.

The first thing to try is reboot the modem (turn it off and then back on). You should have a solid light to show that your broadband is active. Make sure you have a filter on each phone socket. Swap filters to see if that makes a difference.

Internal phone wiring around the house can cause the problem. Move your router to the main phone socket and disconnect all phones and other gadgets (like digital TV boxes). Still no light? Its either the modem itself or your line has a fault. Time to phone your provider and ask for a line check.

If your broadband is active but you still cannot get on the Internet, then the problem is in your computer. Check it is connected to the modem. Look in Device Manager to see if the network card is installed. At the command prompt type IPCONFIG /ALL to see if the computer has an IP address. Again at the command prompt type NETSH WINSOCK RESET.

IF your browser is IE7 try running it without add-ons (launch from the System menu.)

Q: WHY IS MY COMPUTER SO SLOW?
A:

Your computer may be slow because you have too many programs running in the background. You might have a virus, or you might have a hardware problem, like a failing disk-drive.

Click on Start > All programs > Startup. Delete the icons you find here. You are only deleting the links, not the actual programs.

Look in the System Tray (bottom right). Many of these programs can be configured so that they do not start up with Windows. Look for options, preferences or settings and uncheck options like automatically start with Windows. When you restart the computer, it should take less time to become usable. You can also use the MSCONFIG tool (Start > Run > MSCONFIG) to turn off more startup programs but be careful. Don't stop any of the Windows services from running.

Go through ADD Remove Programs and delete the programs you no longer use.

Press CTRL + ALT + DEL to bring up the Task Manager. Look for any running processes that are hogging all of the resources. If the processor is stuck to 100% usage then you may have a virus.

In Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > System look for errors. These would point to any hardware problems.

Of course you might just have a slow computer. For Windows XP SP2 you should have at least 512MB RAM. For Vista, 1GB RAM minimum.

Q: MY EMAIL ISN'T WORKING
A: Are you connected to the Internet? Have you configured the email server names correctly? Are you using the correct account name and password to login to your mail server? Do you have a spam filter of anti-virus program that may be preventing your messages reaching your inbox?
Q: MY COMPUTER WON'T START
A:

If nothing happens when you press the on button, try plugging into a different power socket. Swap the power lead. Still nothing? You may have a dead power supply unit or motherboard. Call a technician.

If the fans work and lights come on but nothing else, it could be a faulty graphics card, hard drive or motherboard. Call the technician again.

Q: HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE A VIRUS?
A:

Sometimes it is obvious. Your Internet home page gets changed. You get web sites opening that you did not ask for. Pop-ups warn that you have a problem that needs fixing now. The worst infections render the computer unusable.
